Technical Coordinator, Asia-Pacific Region, Sustainable Agriculture Division (Bali - Indonesia)
Position Summary :
The Technical Coordinator will support the Manager, Asia-Pacific Region to build and manage coffee, tea and cocoa field programs in the region. S/he will assist in managing field consultants’ work, producer training activities, partner identification and support, reports to donors, site visits by companies and other program development Although based in Denpasar and working mainly in Indonesia, the Technical Coordinator will also be required to undertake activities across the Asia Pacific region (mainly China, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam).
Responsibilities :
- Promote and disseminate information about Rainforest Alliance Certification to farmers, farmer groups, cooperatives, processors and exporters such that they understand and are able to apply the requirements of the SAN standard;
- Coordinate and participate in diagnostics of farms and groups to determine their improvement needs;
- Provide training and technical assistance directly or through training providers to farmers, farmer groups, processors and exporters to facilitate Rainforest Alliance Certification; technical support will focus on the best management practices contained in the SAN standard and the group standard;
- Provide support to the Manager on developing and maintaining project workplans and budgets;
- Develop and/or adapt, in coordination with the Manager and Technical Capacity Manager, technical support tools – manuals, designs, self-evaluations, checklists, and other materials – for use by local technical assistance providers, farmers, and group administrators;
- Assist in the development of local interpretation guidelines for the SAN standard where required in the region;
- Identify and gather information pertaining to key stakeholders; develop and maintain relations with key stakeholders in the tea, coffee and cocoa sectors, including producers and producer groups, processors, exporters, NGOs, and representatives of important government agencies;
- Compile and maintain up-to-date information about tea, coffee and cocoa production and producers: production volumes, types, principle markets and producers, the outlook for certification;
- Identify candidates to become local trainers and auditors;
- Organize and host visits by RA staff and others that they may arrange, such as journalist tours;
- Prepare diagnostic and training reports, as well as monthly updates and quarterly periodic reports;
- Participate in fundraising activities and the development of new projects and programmes in the region; and
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in agronomy or related field; Master’s Degree preferred;
- 3-5 years of tea, coffee and/or cocoa sector experience in Indonesia; must be familiar with agricultural supply chains, farming and agriculture production and processing activities both large-scale and small-scale;
- Farmer training and/or extensionist experience, especially in the design, organization and delivery of training events;
- Familiarity with certification/verification issues and systems, ideally involving agriculture and small-scale producers preferred;
- Solid understanding of value chains and experience of working with companies and farmers;
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English, verbal communication skills in Indonesian, written skills in Indonesian preferred, other local languages are an advantage;
- Proven ability to work effectively in cross-cultural situations;
- Excellent computer skills (MS Office and Internet);
- Experience in the development of work plans and budgets; ability to work independently and in a team towards defined objectives and goals; and
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively in Indonesia and other countries in Asia-Pacific up to 40% of the time and to spend significant periods in rural areas.
Regional Manager, Asia Pacific - SmartWood Program, Sustainable Forestry Division (Bali, Indonesia)
Position Summary:
Responsibilities:
- Marketing & Sales
- In conjunction with SmartWood management, develop strategic business plans for the Asia Pacific region with special emphasis on entering new markets and adding new RA services in this region;
- Directly market SmartWood certification to potential commercial, community, forestry and wood products industry;
- Develop and meet sales and business targets for the region;
- Provide certification client leads to the SmartWood headquarters; and
Customer Service
Provide customer service to current and interested clients in the Asia Pacific region, to include but not limited to, information about certification, market linkages, and guidance on certification process, logo use, marketing, etc.; and
Project Management
Provide customer service to current and interested clients in the Asia Pacific region, to include but not limited to, information about certification, market linkages, and guidance on certification process, logo use, marketing, etc.; and
Project Management
- Ensure that SmartWood representatives and consultants follow and implement the relevant technical and administration certification protocols in the region;
- Ensure close coordination with the SAAS program to ensure efficiencies and opportunities for both programs are sought, explored and implemented;
- Provide input from the region in the policy development and technical improvements of the RA certification systems;
- Identify and increase the pool of qualified representatives, consultants and assessors; and
- Provide direct first response to complaints and disputes relating to active certification assessments and clients.
Manage Certification Jobs
Eventually be able to serve as lead auditor for FSC or SAN certification; and
Write and review certification assessment and audit reports.
Partnerships & Representation
- Serve as the senior representative for RA with government, industry, and NGOs in the region;
- Deliver certification training courses for representatives and consultants; and
- Identify and develop new alliances, including RA representatives in all target countries, to develop capacity with in-country government, industry, and NGOs.
Finance & Operations Management
- Oversee and responsible for local operational activities including office administration, IT, accounting, and human resources;
- Oversee the finances and accounting of the regional office. Ensure timely and accurate submission of local government required financial reporting and monthly financial reporting to Finance-NY;
- Act as senior-level in-country program person;
- Serve as legal representative and holder of powers of attorney as needed;
- Serve as senior-level liaison to operations, human resources, and legal teams at Rainforest Alliance headquarters;
- Have signing authority on bank accounts including co-signing checks above pre-determined limit;
- Convene monthly operations meetings with other senior level program representatives and operations staff;
- In coordination with Finance-NY develop annual budget and support annual audit;
- Create a culture of team building and unity in the Indonesia office; and
- Ensure effective communications among programs in the Indonesia office.
Supervisory
Responsibilities
- Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws; and
- Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree in Business Management, Forestry/Forest Products, Agriculture, Ecology, Natural
- Resource Management or a related field; Masters Degree preferred;
- Minimum of 5 years managerial level experience;
- Experience in a results-driven sales and marketing position with demonstrated success in achieving revenue goals;
- Knowledge of FSC or SAN certification protocols a plus;
- Must have strong planning, analytical, and project management skills, with ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines;
- Strong interpersonal skills;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English;
- Language capability in either Bahasa Indonesian, Japanese, or Malay-based language a plus; and
- Strong computer skills (i.e. word processing, spreadsheet and presentations).
